Date:November 29, 2002Yup, those were our telegenic faces lighting up your morning with Michael and Fiona. That was quite an experience, what with having to wake up at 4am and then produce inspired pop music at 7:51am precisely. Positively unGodly! The biggest challenge of course was trying to match Fiona and Michael's chirpiness, afterall they are professionals. All round though a great experience and a great bunch of people at Citytv.Conrad Review In Discorder MagazineDate:August 13, 2002The three guys in Conrad have described themselves as "gormless" and "cranky", but neither of these is a description that comes to mind when you actually hear them. Instead you notice a kind of laid-back (and very composed), sad coolness, both in the pulled-back arrangements and airy vocals that are a little reminiscent of Lloyd Cole. Closer scrutiny reveals surprising and fresh snippets of lines like "I wanna smell all your magazines" (to name just one, from "Paisley"). Alas, there's no lyric sheet to help you follow the story line of "Sister's Wedding" or pick out the words that are tucked in under the the instruments on the other songs. But if the tidbits I made out are any indication, it's certainly worth the effort. - Janis McKenzie, Discorder, August 2002Conrad Gets Press in Vancouver's Queue MagazineDate:August 13, 2002Local trio Conrad performs richly textured, jangly pop from a charming self-titled debut at the Railway, Wednesday.
The presence of a lap steel guitar (not a regular feature of the band) doesn't transform this trio into a country band but it does add a lot of expansive atmosphere. Sounds like Cracker in a reflective mood. The CD release party is tomorrow night at the Railway. - Tom Harrison
